"Together, We Create, Together We Sustain" was the official tagline of the 15th Semangat Astra Terpadu Untuk (SATU) Indonesia Awards 2024. After a rigorous selection process, Garda Pangan was selected as one of the finalists from a total of 16,775 participants and was ultimately honored as the winner in the Environmental category.
The SATU Indonesia Awards, organized annually by PT Astra International Tbk., recognizes outstanding young Indonesians and youth-led initiatives that develop sustainable solutions across various sectors, including health, education, the environment, entrepreneurship, and technology. The award ceremony was held in Jakarta on October 29, 2024, where the award was presented by Astra President Director Djony Bunarto Tjondro to Kevin Gani, representing Garda Pangan.
Since its establishment in 2017, Garda Pangan has remained committed to addressing food waste and promoting equitable access to food. Through initiatives such as rescuing surplus edible food and redistributing it to underserved communities, the organization has helped bridge food access disparities in Surabaya while reducing the environmental impact of food waste. To date, Garda Pangan has rescued more than 577,000 meals, preventing an estimated 533,900 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions.
The award ceremony was followed by a talk show featuring the five winners from each award category, who shared the inspiration behind their initiatives and the challenges they have faced.
"Indonesia is the second-largest food-wasting country among the G20 nations, with food waste making up the largest share of its waste stream. Yet this issue has not received the attention it deserves. At the same time, 19.4 million Indonesians still experience hunger," said Kevin Gani, explaining the motivation behind the establishment of Garda Pangan during the talk show.
Garda Pangan hopes that this recognition will inspire more young people across Indonesia to take an active role in building a more sustainable and food-secure future.
