Our Programs
Garda Pangan applies the Food Recovery Hierarchy to address food loss and food waste comprehensively, from upstream to downstream.

Food rescue is the practice of recovering surplus food from the hospitality industry and food businesses before it goes to waste.
Garda Pangan partners with restaurants, hotels, bakeries, cafés, eateries, catering services, retailers, distributors, FMCG companies, and other food businesses committed to donating their safe, surplus food. Every day, our team collects unsold food directly from our partners and redistributes it door-to-door to communities in need.
To ensure food safety, Garda Pangan follows strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to guarantee that all donated food is handled safely, hygienically, and with dignity. Our partners also receive monthly reports detailing the amount of food redistributed through the partnership, along with the estimated greenhouse gas emissions prevented through food waste reduction.
Through food rescue, we ensure that safe, edible surplus food reaches people who need it most instead of ending up as waste.

Garda Pangan rescues safe, surplus food from various events, including weddings, conferences, festivals, parties, and other celebrations. This program is made possible through collaborations with Event Organizers, Wedding Organizers, catering providers, and event hosts.
The rescued food is carefully sorted, repackaged when necessary, and immediately redistributed to communities in need.
If you are planning an event, we encourage you to contact us at least three days in advance so we can prepare for the food rescue. If no surplus food remains after your event, there's no need to worry! It simply means your event was well planned and food was managed efficiently. If surplus food is available after the event, it can also be delivered directly to our office.
Note: At this time, we only accept food rescue requests for events held in Surabaya.
Gleaning is the practice of recovering edible crops left in farms or orchards because they do not meet cosmetic market standards. It also takes place during peak harvest seasons, when commodity prices fall significantly and farmers may leave part of their harvest uncollected because it is no longer economically viable to harvest.
Garda Pangan volunteers harvest these crops directly from farms and redistribute them to underserved communities that have limited access to nutritious fruits and vegetables. When possible, Garda Pangan also helps farmers market produce with a longer shelf life, such as oranges, apples, lemons, and other fruits, reducing food loss while creating additional economic opportunities for farmers.
Garda Pangan processes food waste that is no longer safe for human consumption using environmentally friendly bioconversion methods, including Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae and Berkeley hot composting. These approaches ensure that food waste and other organic waste are managed responsibly, preventing them from ending up in landfills. Currently, Garda Pangan processes up to 2,000 kilograms of organic waste per day, and we continue to expand our processing capacity.
Garda Pangan partners with leading food businesses and hotels to help them manage their food waste responsibly. Our partners receive comprehensive monthly reports detailing the amount of food waste processed through the partnership, along with the estimated greenhouse gas emissions avoided through sustainable waste management.

Frustrated because the waste you've carefully sorted at home ends up being mixed together again? Join the #OGAHNYAMPAH movement!
#OGAHNYAMPAH is Garda Pangan's organic waste collection service for households and small businesses. We collect organic waste and process it responsibly into animal feed and compost. Each customer receives a dedicated bin for storing organic waste, which is then collected by our team on a regular schedule.
Collection is available three times a week for IDR 250,000 per month, or daily for IDR 500,000 per month. Every customer also receives 3 kg of compost free of charge each month as part of the service.

Garda Pangan provides research and consulting services specializing in Food Loss and Waste (FLW), food waste, organic waste management, Black Soldier Fly (BSF) bioconversion, and other related topics. We also offer food loss, food waste, and organic waste assessment services for businesses, NGOs, and government institutions.
In 2022, Garda Pangan published the policy brief "Reducing Food Waste in Indonesia: Policy Review and Recommendations," which presents policy recommendations to support food waste reduction efforts in Indonesia.
In 2024, together with the Sustainable Food Systems Coalition (Koalisi Sistem Pangan Lestari), Garda Pangan developed Indonesia's Standard Methodology for Measuring Food Loss in Agricultural Production and Food Waste in the Retail Sector. This methodology has since been adopted by Indonesia's National Food Agency for nationwide implementation.
In 2025, Garda Pangan, in collaboration with WRI Indonesia, launched a research initiative to measure food waste in Labuan Bajo, contributing to evidence-based strategies for reducing food loss and waste in Indonesia. Then, in 2025 and 2026, Garda Pangan, together with the National Food Agency, conducted research to quantify food waste from the commercial sector in Jakarta and East Java.

To raise awareness about food waste, Garda Pangan actively delivers educational programs for school students, university students, communities, and businesses.
Our food waste education programs are tailored to the needs of different audiences and delivered through engaging, interactive, and enjoyable learning experiences. Activities may include workshops, educational visits, community service programs, hands-on participation in food rescue activities, and other experiential learning opportunities.

Beyond rescuing surplus food, Garda Pangan actively raises public awareness about food waste through creative campaigns, both online and offline. These initiatives aim to inspire individuals to better understand the impacts of food waste and encourage more sustainable consumption habits.
Our campaigns encourage people to adopt food waste reduction practices in their daily lives, whether at home or within their communities. By empowering individuals to take action, we hope to contribute to reducing food waste across Indonesia.

Garda Pangan has been at the forefront of advocating for policies specifically addressing food loss and waste (FLW), particularly in relation to food redistribution that delivers positive social and environmental impact.
In 2021, Garda Pangan published a comprehensive policy brief containing recommendations for food loss and waste policy in Indonesia. Garda Pangan has also actively contributed to more than 40 FLW policy dialogues, advocating for stronger legal protections for food donors and incentives to encourage food donation practices. In addition, Garda Pangan has collaborated with various civil society organisations, associations, and government ministries in the development of FLW related policies. In 2026, Garda Pangan was appointed as Co Chair of the FLW National Advocacy Group for GRASP2030, further strengthening its role in advancing food loss and waste reduction policies and advocacy at the national level.
