Standard FLW Methodology Launch

After one year of developing the Standard Methodology for Measuring Food Loss and Food Waste, on September 24, 2024, in conjunction with the commemoration of World Food Day, this document was officially launched by KSPL together with its partners, Garda Pangan and Parongpong RAW Lab. Held at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, the launch of this standard methodology was also carried out together with Bapanas and Bappenas as a demonstration of the Indonesian government's commitment to addressing food loss and food waste.

The two documents, "Standard Methodology for Measuring Food Loss at the Farm Level" and "Standard Methodology for Measuring Food Waste in the Retail Sector," were developed with the aim of enabling all stakeholders across the food supply chain to measure food loss and food waste using a consistent and standardized methodology. As an adaptation of the "Food Loss and Waste Accounting and Reporting Standard," one of the international standards developed by FAO, UNEP, WRI, WBCSD, The Consumer Goods Forum, and FUSIONS, this methodology has been adapted to Indonesia's local context and was pilot-tested with 30 farmers in Batu, East Java, as well as selected retail businesses in Indonesia.

In addition to the standard methodology documents, Garda Pangan also developed a Calculation Support Worksheet in the form of an Excel calculator template to help various organizations determine the appropriate methodology, collect data, and prepare food loss and food waste measurement reports.

The launch of this standard methodology is expected to become an important foundation for preventing, managing, and redistributing food loss and food waste in Indonesia. With this methodology, more accurate and standardized analyses can be carried out by various stakeholders as a basis for developing effective policies. This initiative is expected to address critical points within the food supply chain while providing strategic solutions to reduce the economic, social, and environmental impacts of food loss and food waste in Indonesia.
